Andersonville is on the southwest portion of the Edgewater community, around 1.5 miles inland from the shores of Lake Michigan. It is also just 9 miles north of the Chicago Loop, making it an attractive residential destination for the central business district’s professionals and their families. This distance takes 20-30 minutes by car along scenic Lake Shore Drive and about 45 minutes to an hour via public transportation.

Andersonville boasts of an exceptional sense of culture and identity. Its main commercial area, a National Historic District, is home to an impressive array of thriving locally owned businesses. European-style cafés, boutique stores, art galleries, and furniture and crafts shops are crucial parts of this neighborhood. These effectively take the place of national retail and dining chains common in other urban locales.

A brief history of Andersonville

The Andersonville territory used to be a large cherry orchard until the mid-1800s. Families of Swedish descent began to populate the area following the events of 1871’s Great Chicago Fire. The calamity resulted in a ban on wooden houses in Chicago’s main commercial districts, causing the Swedes to head north toward Andersonville’s boundaries.

These communities shaped the area’s economy and culture for decades to come, making their mark from bakeries and delis to local churches that still stand to this day.

In 1976, the Swedish American Center Museum was founded to commemorate and preserve the contributions of Andersonville’s earliest occupants to Chicago culture.
